Nigerians Remind EFCC Chairman, Olukoyede Of Resignation Promise After Failing To Arrest Ex-Kogi Governor, Yahaya

SaharaReporters had reported how Olukoyede said he would resign from office if Yahaya Bello was not eventually prosecuted for the fraud allegations levelled against him.

Nigerians on social media platform, X have demanded for the immediate resignation of Olanipekun Olukoyede, Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over his inability to arrest former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello.

SaharaReporters had reported how Olukoyede said he would resign from office if Yahaya Bello was not eventually prosecuted for the fraud allegations levelled against him.

SaharaReporters in December 2023 exclusively reported how the EFCC seized the $760,910.84 that Bello paid to American International School, Abuja, as school fees in advance for four children until graduation, over alleged money laundering.

Documents obtained by SaharaReporters had shown that Governor Bello through his nephew, Mr Ali Bello had entered an agreement with the school to pay tuition for his four children up to graduation in advance to secure their future.

The agreement was signed and executed on August 23, 2021. Following the execution of the agreement, a total of $845.852.84 was paid into the school account in varied instalments.

The  Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had also declared Yahaya Bello, wanted for offences relating to economic and financial crimes to the tune of N80.2billion in April.

But one month after this announcement, the whereabout of Bello is still unknown and the anti-corruption agency has not released any information about his prosecution.

The long silence on the case has made Nigerians to doubt the competency of EFCC and urged the Chairman to resign for failing to honour his words.

An X user, MC Ugwummadu wrote: “Since Yahaya Bello is no longer in the wanted list of the EFCC, the chairman should just keep his promise and resign Honourably.

“My honest question is: why the drama of his arrest, when it’s obvious it was all a ruse. What’s the threat meant to distract gullible Nigerians?”

“When are you going to parade the very man on your wanted list who stole billions from the coffers of Kogi state. Is his whereabouts not known to you guys yet despite all the resources available to locate him ?? No updates or whatsoever regarding his search and eventual arrest,” another user, Dele wrote.

“EFCC said nothing since the disappearance of yeye Bello the 80 billion naira criminal and you think Nigerians will ever take you serious?” a user, @AnythingTech said.

Bayo Koyeni  added: “If you EFCC can easily arrest yahoo boys , what’s is so difficult to arrest Yahaya Bello den grand father. EFCC,I beg the story of Yahaya Bello and yahoo boys no clear to Nigerian.”

You can easily arrest 26 Suspected Internet Fraudsters.

But it’s difficult to arrest 1 ex-governor Yahaya Bello.
