Strengthening Nutrition and Food Security Collaboration: Hon. Chike John Okafor PhD Meets with EU Ambassador in the European Union House,

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Nutrition and Food Security, Hon. Chike John Okafor PhD, met with Ambassador Gautier Mignot, Head of the European Union Delegation to Nigeria and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), to discuss ways to strengthen collaboration on nutrition and food security initiatives in Nigeria.

The meeting, which was also attended by Alexandre Castellano, Head of Office-Nigeria, Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO), and Barr. Chiojioke Ikpo, Legal Attachee, aimed to explore potential areas of collaboration to address malnutrition and food insecurity in Nigeria.

Key Highlights

Nutrition and Food Security Initiatives: The committee discussed potential collaborations to address malnutrition and food insecurity in Nigeria, particularly in the North East and North West regions.

  • Capacity Building: The EU officials expressed willingness to support capacity-building programs for lawmakers, healthcare providers, and stakeholders to enhance understanding of nutrition-related issues.
  • Humanitarian Aid: The meeting highlighted the EU’s commitment to providing humanitarian aid to vulnerable populations in Nigeria, including those affected by conflict and displacement.

In his remarks, the EU Ambassador stated- “We are committed to supporting Nigeria’s efforts to address nutrition and food security challenges,”. The Head of Nigeria office lending his voice asserted that “The EU’s humanitarian aid efforts will continue to prioritize the most vulnerable populations in Nigeria,” Alexandre Castellano.
In the days ahead , Hon Chike led committee
will work closely with the EU officials to explore potential areas of collaboration, including emergency nutrition responses, capacity building, and technical assistance.

The meeting underscores the commitment of both parties to strengthening nutrition and food security collaboration in Nigeria and improving the well-being of Nigerians
