Senator Orji Uzor Kalu Deserves a Third Term: A Case for Justice, Performance, and Strategic Continuity

By Ike Okoroafor, Abam.

As the 2027 elections approach, the political landscape of Abia North is once again stirred by debates over representation, equity, and leadership. At the center of this discourse is Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (OUK), whose bid for a third term in the Senate has sparked both passionate support and vocal opposition. But when facts, history, and performance are laid bare, the case for OUK’s continued leadership becomes not only compelling, but essential.

Historical Precedent: Senator Uche Chukwumerije’s Legacy

The argument that a third term is unprecedented in Abia North falls flat when viewed against the legacy of the late Senator Uche Chukwumerije. Representing Abia North from 2003 until his death in 2015, Chukwumerije served three consecutive terms, totaling 12 years in the Senate. His tenure was marked by ideological conviction and consistent representation, setting a precedent that validates OUK’s ambition.

Strategic Representation: What Ohafia Has Already Achieved

Calls for “justice” from Ohafia stakeholders must be weighed against the substantial political capital the region has already enjoyed:

  • Deputy Governorship: Ohafia has produced two consecutive Deputy Governors with a combined 12-year tenure.
  • Federal Representation: The current House of Representatives member for Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency is from Ohafia.
  • State Leadership: Ohafia has also produced Speakers and Deputy Speakers of the Abia State House of Assembly.
  • Federal Appointments: Figures like the late Chief Ojo Maduekwe held multiple federal roles, including Minister of Foreign Affairs and Nigerian Ambassador to Canada.

These facts dismantle any claims of marginalization and highlight Ohafia’s deep-rooted influence in Abia’s political structure.

Performance Over Politics: OUK’s Transformational Impact

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu’s tenure has been defined by tangible development and strategic leadership:

  • Infrastructure Projects: Roads such as the Ebem, Asaga, Ndi Ibe, Amuma, Okon, Amangwu Ohafia axis have been rehabilitated under his watch.
  • Education: Over 50 schools have been renovated or constructed across Ohafia LGA.
  • Electrification and Empowerment: Communities like Nkporo Okwe and Abiriba have benefited from electricity projects and youth empowerment programs.

These are not abstract promises, they are visible, measurable outcomes that have improved lives.

Strategic Continuity: Why Experience Matters

In the Senate, seniority matters. A ranking senator like OUK holds:

  • Committee Influence: Ability to chair or influence key committees.
  • Federal Access: Easier access to federal ministries and agencies.
  • Legislative Clout: Greater ability to push bills and attract federal projects.

Replacing OUK with a first-timer would weaken Abia North’s voice in Abuja and risk reversing the gains already made B.

The People Have Spoken

The Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL) and grassroots organizations like the OUK Movement amongst others have publicly endorsed OUK’s third-term bid, citing his unmatched performance and leadership. Their message is clear: this is not about entitlement, it’s about results.

Justice Is Performance, Not Sentiment

Justice for Ohafia is not about rotating seats,it’s about ensuring the best representation for all. With a legacy of strategic leadership, a record of developmental impact, and a precedent set by Senator Chukwumerije, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu’s third-term ambition is not only justified, it is necessary.

Abia North must choose continuity, competence, and credibility. And in that equation, OUK remains the most qualified, tested, and trusted candidate.
