Most Nigerian politicians form foundations during or after assuming public office and use these organizations as a form of penance to offset their misdeeds while in power. A remarkable departure from this norm is the Orji Uzor Kalu Foundation, whose activities began long before Orji Uzor Kalu became the Governor of Abia State. The humanitarian activities of the foundation has no link with the political offices OUK has occupied and the foundation is sponsored by him personally.
The Orji Uzor Kalu Foundation, established by the visionary leader Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, the Senator Representing Abia North in the National Assembly has been a beacon of hope and empowerment for countless individuals Abia State and in Nigeria. With a rich history of humanitarian activities, the foundation has consistently demonstrated its commitment to uplifting the underprivileged and promoting sustainable development.
Orji Uzor Kalu Foundation is a non-profit, non-political, non-governmental organization committed to improving the status of underprivileged people in Africa through creating awareness of their rights and responsibilities, providing opportunities, and offering empowerment for total transformation. With headquarters in Abuja and branches in Igbere (Abia State), Port Harcourt, and Lagos, the foundation received Special Consultative Status from the United Nations NGO branch (Office of the ECOSOC Support and Coordination) on July 26, 2017.
A Legacy of Compassion
Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, a former Governor of Abia State (1999–2007) and current Senator representing Abia North, founded the Orji Uzor Kalu Foundation with a profound understanding of the needs of his people. Through the foundation, he has touched the lives of thousands of Nigerians, providing support and opportunities for growth. The foundation’s initiatives span various sectors, including education, healthcare, economic empowerment, and community development.
Empowering the Next Generation
One of the foundation’s flagship programs is its scholarship scheme, which has provided financial assistance to hundreds of students pursuing higher education. This initiative has not only enabled talented individuals to achieve their academic goals but has also contributed to the development of a skilled and knowledgeable workforce. More recently, the foundation has sponsored young Nigerians to study medicine abroad, further expanding its educational impact.
Healthcare and Community Development
The foundation’s healthcare initiatives focus on providing medical treatment and health education to rural communities and internally displaced persons (IDP) camps. Additionally, it has implemented various community development projects, including flood control initiatives and the provision of relief materials to displaced persons.
Key Interventions
Petty Trader’s Interest-Free Loan Scheme:
Commenced in 1997, with over ten thousand beneficiaries to date. This interest free loan has help several petty traders either start a trade or improve on their business.
Vehicle Empowerment Scheme: In early January 2018, the foundation distributed Toyota Sienna cars and buses to selected transporters as part of its youth empowerment program. The aim was to help youths become economically self-reliant and productive in the transportation sector. The event was graced by Chief John Oyegun, the former Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and other dignitaries.
IDP Support:
In collaboration with the Presidential Committee on North-East Initiative (PCNI), the foundation conducted a free medical outreach at the Bakassi IDP camp, one of the largest internally displaced persons’ camps in Borno State. It treated over 1,000 internally displaced persons suffering from Vesico-Vaginal Fistula (VVF) and over 2,000 patients with diabetic ulcers.
Maiden Igbere Cultural Festival: In its quest to promote rich Nigerian culture and values, the foundation created the annual “Igbere Cultural Festival.” The maiden edition was held on January 26, 2018, with the theme “Consolidation of the Dignity, Cultural Heritage & Traditional Values of Igbere.” The event featured remarkable displays of Nigerian culture, including a beauty contest, lectures, traditional wrestling competitions, and other activities.
Palm Seedlings Scheme:
The foundation purchased 450,000 palm seedlings and distributed them freely to beneficiary farmers from Abia and neighbouring states such as Rivers and Akwa Ibom. This initiative encouraged farmers to engage in palm plantations and other cash crops to create wealth.
Wheelchair Donation:
The Orji Uzor Kalu Foundation has donated wheelchairs to numerous physically challenged persons in Abia North and beyond.
