
Hon Deacon Chike John Okafor PhD., Chairman House Committee on Nutrition and Food Security Forges Strategic Alliance with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, FAO

In a significant step towards bolstering Nigeria’s fight against hunger and malnutrition, the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Nutrition and Food Security, paid a pivotal familiarization visit to the newly posted Country Representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to Nigeria and to the ECOWAS, Dr Hussein Gadain.

The meeting held today at the FAO office located within the United Nations House,Abuja, served as a platform for constructive dialogue on critical national issues.

Central to the discussions was the shared goal of achieving Zero Hunger in Nigeria.
Both parties engaged in extensive talks, sharing valued opinions on:
- Strategies to combat food insecurity and malnutrition.
- The vital role of nutrition in national development.
- Establishing an effective synergy between the House Committee and the FAO to streamline beneficial interventions across Nigeria.
Hon. Okafor, Member Representing Ehime Mbano, Ihitte Uboma, and Obowo Federal Constituency Imo State, emphasized the 10th National Assembly’s commitment to providing legislative support that creates an enabling environment for sustainable agricultural practices, harmonized tax abolishment of fraudulent multiple tax on trucks carrying food items in Nigeria, National food security programs.

A release by Okonkwo V Okonkwo, Senior Legislative Aide to Hon Deacon Chike John Okafor, PhD., says, Hon Okafor used the opportunity to extend invitation to the FAO Rep to visit the Governor and Government of his home state of Imo with the view to depeen the already existing strategic partnership with Imo State Government,so as to increase their portfolio interventions and developmental programs in the state,
Dr. Gadain welcomed the collaboration and emphasized his readiness to visit Imo State,reaffirming the FAO’s dedication to supporting Nigeria’s policies and initiatives aimed at ensuring food and nutrition security for all citizens.
This collaborative meeting marks a promising start to a strengthened partnership, poised to drive tangible and impactful change in Nigeria’s nutrition and food security landscape.
