Insecurity: It’s a Systemic Security Failure – Hon. Chike Okafor

The Chairman Committee on Nutrition and National Food Security, and member representing Ehime Mbano, Ihitte Uboma, Obowo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Chike Okafor, PhD, has identified systemic failure of the Nation’s security architecture as the major challenge being faced in the country.

Hon. Okafor made this assertion, during the two day plenary debate on National security, at the green chambers of the National Assembly.

Hon. Okafor, who spoke briefly, having submitted a more detailed contribution to the office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Thajudden Abbas, PhD, stated that insecurity knows no tribe, religion or diversity, thus should be tackled frontally as an issue of urgent National importance.

Hon. Okafor stated that, in his capacity as the Committee chairman on Nutrition and National Food Security, he is concerned that insecurity has taken a toll on the administration’s effort in ensuring food security, because farmers have been displaced.

The displacement of farmers, he said, affects crop and livestock production, which, in turn, mitigates the food security roadmap being implemented by his committee.

Speaking further, Hon. Okafor decried the dearth of intelligence gathering, among the agencies, is a key indicator of systemic failure, which explains why very obvious occurrences happen unchallenged because it was not detected timely enough to be acted upon.
Hon. Okafor urged the House to rise beyond mere rhetorics, to ensure their oversight and legislative engagements that security is restored and enhanced across the country.

Notably, Hon. Okafor, hinged his submissions on the words of the National Anthem, drawing across the three stanzas, thus, “thought tribe and tongue may differ, in brotherhood we stand”, again, he cited “to hand to our children a banner without stain” finally he drew from the last stanza saying”help us to build a nation where no man is oppressed “.
