Meet Nigerian born, new UK trade envoy to Nigeria
Florence Eshalomi, a Nigerian-British politician, has been appointed the United Kingdom’s (UK) trade envoy to Nigeria.
Eshalomi confirmed her appointment in a post on X on Wednesday, expressing her eagerness to strengthen the relationship between the two nations.
In her post, she wrote, “It is an honour to have been appointed as the United Kingdom’s Trade Envoy to Nigeria. I’m looking forward to building on my close ties with Nigeria to promote a strong and flourishing economic relationship between our two great nations.”
She continued, “I am excited to further enhance the UK’s relationship with Nigeria and explore shared growth and opportunities for both countries.”
Things to know about her.
Political career: Florence Eshalomi is currently the Member of Parliament (MP) for Vauxhall and Camberwell Green, a position she assumed after being re-elected in 2024 for the newly created constituency. She first became an MP for Vauxhall in 2019, succeeding Kate Hoey.
Background: Born on September 18, 1980, in Birmingham, Florence is the daughter of a Nigerian father, Anthony Nosegbe. She is the first member of her family to attend university, earning a BA (Hons) in Political & International Studies with Law from Middlesex University.
Early career: Eshalomi began her career at 16, working at Sainsbury’s before transitioning into public affairs and campaigning.
Local Government Involvement: Her political journey began as a local councillor for Brixton Hill on Lambeth Borough Council in London.
Family life: Eshalomi is married to Matthew, and the couple has two children, Mia and Malachi.
