CHRISM MASS
Today, Our Archbishop, Most Rev. Lucius I. Ugorji celebrated his first Chrism Mass as the Archbishop of Owerri Archdiocese. Archbishop L. Ugorji was appointed the Archbishop of Owerri Archdiocese on 6th March, 2022, and was installed on 23rd June, 2022.
The significance of the Chrism Mass in the life of the Church cannot be overemphasized. It is a Mass which the bishop of a diocese celebrates with his presbyterate as a manifestation of the priests’ communion with their bishop. In this mass, three sets of oil used by the bishops and priests to administer the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Anointing of the Sick are blessed by the bishop of the diocese in union with his priests. These three sets of oil are: the Oil of Catechumen (used for Baptism), the Oil of the Sick (used for the anointing of the sick), and the Chrism (used for Confirmation, Baptism, Ordination, and Consecration of the altar). It is also in this mass that priests renew their priestly promises.
The Chrism Mass today was presided by the chief shepherd of the Archdiocese of Owerri, Most Rev Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji. The Auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese, Most Rev Moses Chikwe, and the Archbishop Emeritus, Most Rev. Anthony J.V. Obinna, were all present at the Mass.
