Olayinka Hakeem Babalola Makes History as Rotary International President
This week we celebrate Olayinka Hakeem Babalola, a distinguished Nigerian engineer, business leader, and humanitarian who made history recently by assuming office as President of Rotary International, becoming only the second African ever to lead one of the world’s largest and most respected humanitarian organisations in its 120-year history.
His election to the organisation’s highest office is not only a personal milestone but a proud moment for Nigeria and the African continent, reflecting the growing impact of Nigerian professionals and leaders in shaping global conversations on peace, humanitarian service and sustainable development. His emergence marks a defining moment for Rotary’s worldwide network of more than 1.2 million members spread across 45,000 clubs in nearly every country.
Assuming office at a time when many parts of the world are confronting conflict, economic uncertainty, climate-related challenges and public health concerns, Babalola believes organisations such as Rotary have an important role to play in bringing people together to solve shared problems.
“At a time when many societies face division and uncertainty, I believe Rotary has an important role to play in building understanding, advancing peace and creating opportunities for communities to thrive,” he says.
Not surprisingly, as Rotary International President for the 2026–2027 Rotary year, Babalola has unveiled an ambitious vision centred on peacebuilding, sustainable community development, humanitarian service, and inclusive global partnerships.
Over the years, he has played an active role in advancing Rotary’s peace initiatives, particularly through the Rotary Peace Center at Makerere University in Uganda, the organisation’s first peace centre on the African continent. His presidency is expected to reinforce Rotary’s commitment to dialogue, conflict prevention, reconciliation, youth empowerment, and sustainable peace initiatives across regions facing instability. Observers believe his African experience positions him uniquely to champion practical, community-driven solutions to complex global challenges.
Among the most important responsibilities of his presidency will be leading Rotary’s continuing global effort to eradicate polio once and for all.
As one of the founding partners of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), Rotary has helped reduce global polio cases by 99.9 per cent, contributing more than US$3 billion and millions of volunteer hours to immunise over three billion children worldwide.
Babalola has personally contributed significantly to this campaign, serving on the End Polio Now Countdown to History Campaign Committee and advising the Nigeria National PolioPlus Committee, where his strategic leadership helped sustain momentum toward a polio-free future.
Babalola’s emergence as Rotary International President crowns more than four decades of dedicated service to Rotary and community development. His Rotary journey began in 1984 through Rotaract, Rotary’s youth leadership programme, before he joined the Rotary Club of Trans Amadi, Rivers State, in 1994. Since then, he has served in numerous strategic leadership positions, earning widespread respect for his commitment to humanitarian service, ethical leadership, and organisational excellence.
His rise to Rotary International’s highest office reflects a lifetime of achievement in both professional leadership and humanitarian service. He built an accomplished professional career spanning more than 30 years in the oil and gas industry, where he held senior executive positions with Shell PLC.
Leveraging his extensive engineering and management expertise, he later established an infrastructure delivery company, and a consulting company specialising in executive coaching, leadership development, and organisational transformation.
He is active in the various professional bodies to which he belongs.
Babalola’s election to head one of the world’s foremost humanitarian organisations reinforces Nigeria’s growing reputation as a country that continues to produce men and women whose contributions extend far beyond its borders.
