‎Kalu Launches Landmark Free Healthcare Scheme: 500+ Abia North Constituents Enrolled in One-Year NHIS Program

‎Former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu moves to bridge health inequality, partners with over 80 public and private facilities including FMC Umuahia to deliver no-cost medical services across five LGAs.

‎In a bold move to redefine constituency welfare, the Senator representing Abia North, His Excellency Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, has officially enrolled over 500 constituents into a comprehensive, one-year free medical treatment program under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

‎The initiative, which targets residents across the five local government areas of Abia North, guarantees beneficiaries access to quality healthcare at zero out-of-pocket cost. The program was unveiled over the weekend, with the Senator’s Aide, Barrister Victor Etie, standing in for the lawmaker.

‎“Health is wealth. A healthy person is a productive person,” Etie stated at the enrollment ceremony. “This is the driving force behind Senator Kalu’s commitment. His constituents can now walk into any of the designated hospitals of their choice and access medical care without paying a dime.”

‎Data obtained from the Abia State Comprehensive Health Facility Masterlist reveals that Senator Kalu’s office has strategically partnered with a wide spectrum of accredited health centers to ensure seamless service delivery. The list of participating facilities includes not only tertiary institutions but also a robust network of primary and secondary care providers.

‎Key facilities documented in the state’s health registry that are participating in the scheme include, Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia Listed as a Primary and Secondary facility offering specialized services ranging from General Surgery and Internal Medicine to Ophthalmology and Dentistry. Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH), Umueze, serving as a major referral center with full-service capacity, including Pediatrics and Radiology, Living Word Hospital which is a Primary and Secondary facility providing General Surgery, Internal Medicine, and Orthopaedics. St. Anthony’s Hospital Ltd, a full-service hospital offering Pharmacy, Laboratory, and Dental services and Blossoms Women and Family Specialist Hospital, specializing in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

‎This also indicates that the free medical program is not limited to urban centers. Hospitals in rural Local Government Areas, including Bende (Tochi Hospital and Maternity Uzuakoli Bende LGA), Umunneochi (Christ De King Health Services Ltd Ngodo Isuochi), Isuikwuato ‎(Abia State University Teaching Hospital Uturu, 22, 143 battalion clinic, Ovim Isuikwuato), Ohafia (General hospital Ohafia, 2, Uzondu polyclinic Amaekpu Ohafia), Arochukwu, (Nicom hospital Ihechiowa Arochukwu), (Alias Chris Linda hospital) are also listed as active facilities ensuring that even the most remote constituents benefit from the scheme.

‎There are about 100 hospitals where the beneficiaries of Sen. Kalu’s free medical treatment can access free medical care and some of the hospitals are as follows.

‎The program covers a wide array of secondary services, including General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Laboratory diagnostics, Pharmacy, and even specialized optometry and dental care, as coded in the state’s health registry.

‎Beneficiaries, who have already begun visiting their chosen hospitals, expressed relief at the removal of financial barriers to treatment. “My children can finally get the malaria treatment they need without me having to sell our goods, I thank Senator Orji Uzor Kalu for facilitating this great initiative,” said a mother from Umunneochi who enrolled in the scheme.

‎Kalu’s Aide, Etie confirmed that the enrollment portal remains structured, and constituents are advised to visit their pre-selected hospitals immediately to begin accessing care.

‎“This is not a campaign promise. This is a functioning reality,” Etie added. “Senator Kalu is showing that public office is about solving the primary needs of the people—starting with their health.”
