Independence Day Special: Chike Okafor The Marveric And Uncommon Legislator

The member representing Okigwe South (Ehime Mbano, Ihitte Uboma and Obowo) in the House of Representatives, Deacon Chike Okafor is undoubtedly an outstanding and examplary federal lawmaker that is giving due credence to our democracy. Infact, he is such a sincere and dedicated legislator every constituency craves to have. He takes his “Legislative Contract” with his people seriously and doesn’t slumber in the business of lawmaking, legislation and oversight. He is always in touch with his constituents and known to visit home every weekend. This must be the reason why his constituents desire him to remain in the hallowed Green Chambers of the National Assembly. This is because of the strong bond they now share with him which has proven difficult to break.

He was born into the family of HRH Eze & Ugoeze Ifeanyichukwu John Okafor of Umuokeh in Obowo LGA of Imo State on 15th November, 1972. Young Chike had his primary education at Umuokeh Primary School before proceeding to Holy Ghost College, Owerri. After his Secondary education, Chike Okafor proceeded to Imo State University, Owerri where he graduated with a BSc in Economics in the year 1997. The Home Boy also holds a Master of Science degree in Human Resource Management from Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) and a PhD from IMSU.

Chike Okafor joined the banking sector in 1999 where he rose to the rank of Senior Manager at Zenith Bank Plc. After 12 years in the banking industry, Chike Okafor was appointed Imo State Commissioner for Finance in 2011 because of his financial expertise and uncommon managerial qualities.

Out of his desire to expand his scope of service to the people, Chike Okafor contested the Okigwe South Federal Constituency seat in 2015.

Chike Okafor has sponsored and co-sponsored many bills and motions for the good governance of Nigeria. He has also attracted many road projects and other infrastructural development to his constituency. He used his position as Chairman House Committee on Health Services to give employment to many constituents of his in many federal establishments. Honestly, he is one of the few lawmakers who is very close to his constituents via periodic town hall meetings and constituency briefings plus Democracy Dividends. His constituency briefings take place in each of the 3 LGAs that make up Okigwe South Federal Constituency. During every constituency briefing, Chike Okafor interacts with his people to feel their pulse and hear their opinion on issues that needs his intervention. He also sponsors free medical treatment and surgeries for ailing constituents. He has also empowered many women and youths in his constituency for self reliance.

Due to his outstanding performance in his first term, the good people of Okigwe South re-elected him into the Green Chambers of the National Assembly in 2019 to continue with his numerous people oriented programs. Additionally, owing to the clarion call from his constituents based on his Legislative Wizardry and Competence, his party the APC has presented him for a third time with the aim of using him to secure more gains at Abuja and corner any principal position that will accrue to the South East.

The primary job of a legislator is lawmaking and in it, Chike Okafor has really distinguished himself. Since his election into the House of Representatives, Chike Okafor has sponsored the following Bills for the good governance of Nigeria:

As the 2023 general elections draw closer, the good people of Ehime Mbano, Ihitte Uboma and Obowo are in a hurry to renew the tenure of this maverick and uncommon legislator for greater legislative service and development of Okigwe South.

To God alone be the glory!
