In the heartland of Igboland, where the pursuit of academic excellence meets the deep roots of ancestral tradition, the ancient land of Umuoma Nekede once again witnessed a sacred gathering. On August 8, 2026, the historic Palace of the Omadike of Umuoma served as the focal point for the climax of the 2026 Odu Umuoma Cultural Festival, a historic cultural milestone whose origins trace back to 1719.
For over three centuries, the Odu Umuoma festival has served as a sacred thanksgiving: a dedicated season when the sons and daughters of Umuoma assemble to give glory and profound gratitude to Almighty God for the gift of the new yam harvest and for sustaining human lives through the rolling cycles of the year.
However, this year’s 307th anniversary was marked by a poignant blend of reverence, deep reflection, and dignified restraint.
A Solemn Commemoration: Culture Meets Respect
Unlike previous years celebrated with vibrant fanfare, flamboyant cultural dances, and lavish public displays, the 2026 edition was purposefully celebrated on a low key. The host land of Nekede is currently in a state of solemnity following the transition of one of her revered royal fathers, His Royal Highness, Eze Dr. Stephen Kemjika Agumanu of Umualum Nekede , who is yet to be laid to rest.
Demonstrating profound respect and communal solidarity, the Traditional Ruler of Umuoma Nekede Autonomous Community, His Royal Highness, Eze Morrison S.J. Eke (B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D., CAM. Dip. London, MNIPR, Omadike of Umuoma), alongside the President General of the community, Chief Okechukwu Opara (Dikeoha), led the community in marking the festival strictly as a spiritual and symbolic observance.
Academia in Harmony with Host Community
Recognizing the deep cultural significance of the festival and the strength of peaceful coexistence, the Rector of Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Dr. Mrs. Basilia Nkemdilim Igbokwe, directed that the institution be officially represented at the highest administrative level. The Rector was ably represented by the Deputy Rector (Academics), Dr. Obinna Iwueke , who was joined by the Polytechnic Librarian, Dr. Charles Obichere.
Delivering the official address on behalf of the Rector at Omadike’s Palace, Dr. Obinna Iwueke conveyed warm congratulations, goodwill, and fraternal greetings to the Omadike of Umuoma, his royal cabinet, and the entire Umuoma community.
On the Significance of Host-Community Synergy:
The Deputy Rector Academics, in his address, stated that “The Management of Federal Polytechnic Nekede, under the leadership of our Rector, Dr. Mrs. Igbokwe does not view Umuoma Nekede merely as a host geographical entity but as our peaceful home and indispensable partner in progress. We are here today to celebrate with you, to pray with you, and to reaffirm that the walls of our institution do not separate us from the rich cultural heritage of the land on which we stand.”_

Dr. Iwueke posited that “We commend HRH Eze Morrison S.J. Eke (PhD) and the leadership of Umuoma Nekede for your royal wisdom in marking this year’s Odu Umuoma on a low key in honour of our departed royal father, HRH Eze Dr. Stephen Kemjika Agumanu. Your decision demonstrates true cultural discipline, empathy, and respect for royal brotherhood. As an institution, we join you in praying for eternal repose for the departed monarch and for continued peace across all autonomous communities in Nekede.”

The Rector’s Rep reiterated that “The new yam festival symbolizes fertility, hard work, unity, and bountiful harvest, values that resonate deeply with our educational mandate at Federal Polytechnic Nekede We assure His Royal Highness and the good people of Umuoma that our polytechnic remains firmly committed to sustaining a continuous, cordial, and mutually beneficial relationship.
