Positive step was taken today, the 6th day of July 2021, towards the actualisation of the establishment of AKANU IBIAM FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, UNWANA, as Nigeria’s House of Representatives unanimously accepted the Report submitted by the Committee on Tertiary Education and Services. Recall that on the 2nd of June, 2020, the House had passed the Second Reading of this Bill, and referred same to the House Committee on Tertiary Education and Services.

With this development, the House has accepted the Committee’s Report, and the Bill is deemed to have gone through Public Hearing. This is often the case when a Bill enjoys the confidence of the Committee to which it is referred to, and the subject matter is deemed not controversial or contentious.

The next stage is for the Rules and Business Committee of the House to slate a date for “Consideration of Report ” to enable a clause by clause passage of contents of the Bill. This is largely a formality.

Looks like we’re firmly and steadily moving towards the actualisation of establishing “Akanu ibiam Federal University of Technology, Unwana, to provide Training and Teaching instruction in every aspect of Education and such other fields of Applied Learning Relevant to the needs of the Development of Education in Nigeria.”

Bill to upgrade Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education to a University of Education, Owerri, Imo State, still awaits the President’s assent, despite being passed by the 8th Assembly, says Governing Board.

Recall that in March, 2017, Two colleges of education, Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri and Federal College of Education, Kano were on the verge of being up graded to universities.

The move followed a bill proposed by Senator Jibrin Barau (APC, Kano) and Senator Samuel Anyanwu (PDP, Imo), for the conversion of these colleges.

The bills, which were named “Federal University of Education Kano (Establishment, etc) Bill, 2016 and Alvan Ikoku University of Education Owerri (Establishment, etc) Bill, 2016”, passed through the first reading at the senate on Thursday, December 1, 2016.
