Today, Justin Welby laid down his bishop’s crozier on the altar in the chapel at Lambeth Palace, marking the end of his ministry as Archbishop of Canterbury. This symbolic act is performed by bishops on leaving office. Archbishop Justin will legally cease to be Archbishop of Canterbury at midnight tonight.
Archbishop Justin spent his final day in office privately at the Palace. He attended Morning Prayer, lunchtime Eucharist and Evensong. The day will conclude with a service of Compline.
During the day the Archbishop met with current staff and some friends and former colleagues to thank them for their work and say farewell.
