Rep Chike Okafor led Committee Visits VP Shettima, Set for National Summit on Nutrition and Food Security

On Wednesday 19th March 2025 in his capacity as the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Nutrition and Food Security and Convener of the National Legislative Network on Nutrition and Food Security (NLNNFS), Hon. Deacon Chike Okafor PhD, member representing Ehime-Mbano, Ihitte-Uboma, and Obowo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, led a delegation of some of his colleagues, members of the House Committee on Nutrition and Food Security, Representatives of Chairmen of State Houses of Assembly Committees on Nutrition and Food Security, one each from the six geopolitical zones of the country and some other relevant stakeholders to a strategic meeting with His Excellency, the Vice President of Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Kashim Shettima, GCON at the State House, Abuja.

During the meeting, Hon. Okafor formally presented an invitation to the Vice President as the Special Guest of Honor at the forthcoming National Summit on Nutrition and Food Security, scheduled for June, 2025.

In appreciation of the significance of this initiative, the Vice President graciously approved the use of the Banquet Hall, Presidential Villa, Abuja, as the official venue for the summit, a key milestone in advancing the collective effort of the NLNNFS.

Further solidifying his commitment, Vice President Shettima directed Hon. Okafor to liaise with the Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Senator Ibrahim Hadejia to ensure full cooperation and support from the presidency towards this all important summit.

Additionally, he pledged to mobilize executive backing, including state Governors, Government agencies, and the private sector, to ensure the achievement of the overall goals and objectives of the proposed legislative summit.

On this delegation was Hon Michael Tolulope Ige, Majority Leader of Ekiti State House of Assembly and Chairperson of the Chairmen of the Committees of Nutrition and Food Security in the state Houses of Assembly,who led his other five colleagues from the six geopolitical zones.

Hon. Okafor appreciates his colleagues, Hon. Bassey Akiba (Calabar Municipal/Odukpani Federal Constituency), Hon. Harrison Anozie Nwadike (Nkwerre/Isu/Nwangele/Njaba Federal Constituency), Hon. Muhammad Aminu Ibrahim (Malumfashi/Kafur Federal Constituency), Hon. Haruna Paul Gowon (Bassa/Dekina Federal Constituency), and Hon. Akin Rotimi (Spokesperson of the House of Representatives/Ekiti North Federal Constituency) who found time to be part of the delegation.

Hon. Ige highlighted the role of state legislatures in advancing nutrition policies.

This engagement marks a crucial step in reinforcing legislative-executive collaboration to implement nutrition-focused policies, strengthen food security measures, and create sustainable interventions for vulnerable populations across the country.

Hon. Chike Okafor believe that with this strong institutional backing, his team is poised to make tangible progress in ensuring a healthier and well-nourished Nigeria.
