Bizarre: First Year Student Shot on Campus Following Rival Gang Clash
A first-year student of the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rumuolumeni, has reportedly been shot by suspected gang members on the university campus.
The incident occurred today, Wednesday, barely 48 hours after a reported clash between two rival gang groups at the institution on Monday. A viral video circulating online shows the injured student lying on a hospital bed and, in another scene, being carried by his coursemates on the university campus. A source close to the victim told our correspondent that the student was rushed to a hospital, where doctors are making efforts to remove bullet pellets lodged in his body.
The source also said the victim’s friends had to contribute money to raise funds for the surgery. However, it could not be independently verified whether the student was a member of any cult group. Meanwhile, the Rivers State Police Command says it will get back to our correspondent on the matter.
Meanwhile, the management of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education has suspended all remaining activities for the Students’ Union Government Week with immediate effect. The suspension comes after a viral video showing students running in different directions, amid sounds of gunshots. In a statement signed by the university Registrar, Dr Chinonye Abraham Ajie, students were directed to return to their classes on Thursday, August 13, for normal academic activities.
The management warned that students who fail to attend lectures will be held responsible for their actions. It also advised students to avoid any activities that could disrupt their studies or threaten peace and order on the university campus.
