In just six months of transformative leadership, Dr. Mrs. Basilia Igbokwe, the Rector of Federal Polytechnic Nekede, has achieved yet another milestone—bringing the first-ever Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) project to the institution. This historic feat was marked on Thursday, 27th March 2025, as the Polytechnic officially received the handover of a solar light project from the NDDC, a significant step towards improving campus infrastructure and energy sustainability.
The handover ceremony, held on campus, underscored the Federal Government’s commitment to infrastructural development in the Niger Delta region. It was graced by high-profile dignitaries, including:

NDDC Reaffirms Commitment to Development
In his address, Hon. Dr. Kyrian Uchegbu reaffirmed the NDDC’s unwavering dedication to fostering development in the Niger Delta, with a particular focus on physical infrastructure and skill acquisition. He noted that Imo State has benefited from numerous developmental projects, including the “Light Up Niger Delta” initiative championed by President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
He further emphasized that the 233 solar-powered streetlights installed within the Polytechnic will significantly enhance security and visibility on campus. While urging the Polytechnic community to provide a conducive working environment for the contractors, he stressed the importance of proper maintenance to ensure the project’s longevity.
Transparency and Quality Assurance in Project Execution
Hon. Uchegbu also clarified that the contractor was not financially mobilized by NDDC and, therefore, must deliver the project within the stipulated timeframe and exact specifications. He assured the Polytechnic community of the administration’s commitment to transparency, quality execution, and accountability in all government projects.
Providing further insights, Mr. Stephen Nwosu, Head of the Project Team, stated that the 233 standing poles would each be fitted with 100-watt lighting bulbs. He emphasized that NDDC holds exclusive supervisory responsibility over the project and urged the Polytechnic community to offer support without interference.
Rector Expresses Profound Appreciation
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Mrs. Basilia Igbokwe expressed her deep gratitude to the NDDC for selecting Federal Polytechnic Nekede as a beneficiary of this landmark initiative. She commended the rapid response in executing the project and used the occasion to advocate for further interventions, particularly in the renovation and replacement of vandalized facilities within the Polytechnic.
The Rector assured the NDDC of the institution’s full cooperation and urged the contractors to maintain the highest standards in executing the project.
Council Chairman Pledges Support
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Governing Council, Hon. Chief Henry Ikechukwu Ikoh, assured the NDDC delegation and contractors of a hospitable and secure working environment within the Polytechnic. He applauded the Federal and Imo State Governments for their continued investment in educational infrastructure and expressed confidence in the timely and successful completion of the project.
Contractors Commit to Timely Delivery
The contractor, Hirokashima, known for successfully handling previous NDDC projects across the Niger Delta, pledged to complete the installation within three weeks, provided a secure and enabling environment is maintained. He assured the Polytechnic community of top-notch service delivery in line with the project’s specifications.

In a heartfelt vote of thanks, Dr. Charles Obichere, Polytechnic Librarian, expressed appreciation to the NDDC Commissioner and his team for their timely intervention in enhancing the Polytechnic’s infrastructural landscape.
