University Of Nigeria, Nsukka shut down indefintely.
…V.C. orders ejection of students from the hostels
The Vice Chancellor, university of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Prof. Benjamin C. Ozumba has unceremoniously ordered that the institution be shut down indefinitely.
This is coming on the heels of protests by students over absence of basic social amenities ranging from light to water etc.
The protest which first occurred last week, resumed again on 1st June, 2015, started from the Enugu campus of the institution known as UNEC and continued in the Nsukka campus.
The protest which was calm, initially, turned violent when security operatives were drafted to the campus, a situation that has left many casualties.
In Nsukka, the students marched through the campus then resorted to pelting every staff building running on generator with stones.
Sources reveal that the protests, though carried out by students may have been engineered by the staff of the school, most of whom are not at home with the policies of the V.C.
The V.C was said to have enforced the publication of 10 academic works in the Impact Factor journal, as one of the criteria for promotion.
This has angered the staff who protested the near impossible policy, citing that even the V.C himself does not have a single work published in the US based journal, besides, they added that the whole world sends work for publication the journal, and one manages to get a chance, in decades, to have a published work in the journal.
Again, there were incidents of hike in virtually everything in the institution, ranging from School fees, to acceptance fess etc.
As at press time, the military has been brought in, to keep things under control, while efforts to reach the University PRO proved abortive.
