Tokyo Olympics: Wrestling Prodigy Oborududu Gives Nigeria A Medal Opportunity

Blessing Oborududu (born 12 March 1989), whose qualification for the final of the 68kg division (Olympics Wrestling) has guaranteed Nigeria’s first-ever Olympic medal in Wrestling.

She defeated Battsetseg Soronzonbold of Mongolia 7-2 to reach the final, and will now face Tamyra Mensah-Stock of the USA. Which means she is guaranteed a Silver Medal at the very least.

The two women have fought before.

Oborududu has won a total of 10 Gold medals at the African Wrestling Championships, one every year in the last 11 years — except for 2012 when she did not compete because of that year’s Summer Olympics.

She is the most successful Nigerian female wrestler of all times, and in February 2020 was ranked No 2 in the world, in the 68kg category, by United World Wrestling (UWW).
