The atmosphere at the School of General Studies (SGS), Federal Polytechnic Nekede , was electrifying on Friday, May 15, 2026, as staff, students, management officials, union leaders, and well-wishers gathered in a colourful and emotional celebration to honour one of their own, the 9th Substantive Rector of the institution, Dr. Mrs. Basilia Nkemdilim Igbokwe.

What began as a simple idea within the School of General Studies blossomed into a historic homecoming reception that many described as one of the most symbolic academic gatherings in recent institutional history. The event, held at the SGS 500 Capacity Auditorium , was not merely a reception, but a celebration of grace, resilience, vision, intellectual excellence, and the breaking of institutional barriers.

Led by the Dean of SGS, Dr. Ada Onyebuenyi , the school mobilized resources, goodwill, and collective commitment to honour the woman they proudly described as “ the Jinx Breaker ” , the first Rector to emerge from the School of General Studies , a school once underestimated within the institution’s structure.

The arrival of the Rector was greeted with cheers, admiration, and heartfelt emotions as she entered the venue accompanied by the Deputy Rector (Academic), Dr. Obinna Iwueke , alongside an impressive array of Deans, Directors, Heads of Departments, union leaders, and principal officers of the Polytechnic. Their presence underscored the unity and institutional solidarity that have continued to define the administration of Dr. Mrs. Basilia Nkemdilim Igbokwe.

One of the emotional highlights of the event was the presentation of a Magnetic Bike gift to the Rector by the School of General Studies as a mark of honour, appreciation, and gratitude for elevating the status and relevance of SGS within the Polytechnic community.

The symbolic presentation represented more than a physical gift; it reflected the school’s appreciation for a leader whose administration has opened new doors of visibility, academic advancement, infrastructural support, and institutional inclusion for SGS staff and students alike.

Speaking during the ceremony, the Dean of SGS, Dr. Ada Onyebuenyi , expressed profound gratitude to members of the school and planning committee for their sacrifices and unwavering support toward the success of the event.

According to her, the celebration was a collective declaration that “ grace can emerge from anywhere ,” noting that the emergence of Dr. Basilia Igbokwe as Rector has restored confidence, aspiration, and renewed hope among academic staff within the school.

She described the Rector as “a shining symbol of possibility ,” whose emergence has permanently altered old narratives surrounding the School of General Studies.

The Chairman of the Planning Committee, Dr. Tony Osuji , equally commended members of SGS for their financial support, teamwork, and unity of purpose. He noted that the stress-free execution of the event was only possible because of the overwhelming love staff members have for the Rector and the SGS family.

Beyond the celebration, the occasion also featured rich intellectual and literary presentations that added academic depth and scholarly prestige to the ceremony.

In a deeply reflective literary tribute titled “Song of Grace ,” Dr Ugochukwu Iwuji poetically described the Rector’s emergence as a divine orchestration of destiny and purpose. The piece portrayed her ascension as a triumph over institutional stereotypes, rigid assumptions, and man-made limitations.

The poetic declaration, “Today grace has located the Nazareth of FPNO,” resonated deeply within the auditorium, drawing emotional applause and admiration from attendees who viewed the Rector’s emergence as inspirational, transformational, and historically symbolic.

Another major intellectual highlight came through a scholaristic presentation by Mr. Chinahuzo Eke titled Digital Mapping of Social Fragmentation in Basilia Igbokwe’s Shattered Hope.

The presentation explored the Rector’s literary work, Shattered Hope , through the lens of Digital Humanities and Social Network Analysis, revealing how tragedy within the text emerged not merely from individual psychology but from progressive societal and relational collapse.

Using digital analytical methods, the researcher mapped the relationships among characters in the novel and demonstrated how social disintegration, broken family ties, failed communication, concealment, and institutional rejection gradually destroyed communal cohesion within the narrative.

The study identified major themes including youth crime as a consequence of network failure, gender-based vulnerability, social isolation, structural injustice, concealment-driven HIV spread, and the collapse of traditional family support systems.

The scholar further argued that the novel presents a powerful national reflection on the dangers of fragmented social structures, emphasizing that “ hope shatters when networks fail.”

One of the major findings presented showed the steady decline of social cohesion within the novel’s structure, with network density collapsing progressively from 76% in the opening act to just 16% at the conclusion, symbolizing total societal breakdown.

The paper equally highlighted how ritual authority in the novel eventually replaced family structures but failed to provide healing, instead functioning through exclusion and expulsion.

Attendees praised the presentation for its originality, intellectual depth, and successful blending of literary scholarship with digital analytical methodology, describing it as a groundbreaking academic contribution within the Humanities and Social Sciences.

In recognition of the outstanding scholarly and literary presentations delivered during the event, the Rector awarded prize money and full conference sponsorship to both Dr. Ugochukwu Iwuji and Mr. Chinahuzo Eke.

Responding to the honour , Dr. Mrs. Basilia Nkemdilim Igbokwe expressed heartfelt appreciation to the School of General Studies for the grand reception and uncommon show of love.

The visibly touched Rector commended SGS for remaining united, visionary, and supportive, assuring the school that her administration would continue to prioritize academic development, staff welfare, infrastructural growth, and institutional advancement.

She acknowledged the strategic role of SGS in building the intellectual foundation of the Polytechnic and highlighted some of the support already extended to the school under her administration, including the immediate construction of the massive SGS office complex, increased access to conferences and academic development opportunities for lecturers, and broader institutional privileges aimed at strengthening the school’s operational relevance.

The Rector further encouraged staff members to remain committed, productive, and hopeful, emphasizing that excellence, consistency, scholarship, and grace remain powerful forces in leadership and career advancement.

Goodwill messages poured in from the Chairman of the Occasion, Dr. Anayo Uhiara , Deans, Directors, Heads of Departments, Union Executives, and academic staff across the institution, many of whom described the Rector as a unifying figure whose administration has brought renewed confidence, infrastructural growth, institutional visibility, and progressive reforms to Federal Polytechnic Nekede.

Several speakers praised her inclusive leadership style, administrative courage, intellectual orientation, and commitment to repositioning the Polytechnic for national relevance and academic excellence.

For many observers, the event transcended celebration; it became a moment of institutional reflection, a reminder that leadership can emerge from unexpected places and that determination, competence, scholarship, and divine grace can rewrite longstanding narratives.

As the ceremony came to a close amid music, cheers, photographs, intellectual conversations, and renewed optimism, one message remained unmistakably clear: the emergence of Dr. Mrs. Basilia Nkemdilim Igbokwe as Rector has become more than an administrative transition, it has evolved into a movement of inspiration across Federal Polytechnic Nekede.

To the School of General Studies, she remains their pride, symbol, scholar, and proof that greatness can emerge from overlooked places.

To Federal Polytechnic Nekede at large, her leadership continues to represent a new era of institutional confidence, inclusive growth, visionary administration, academic transformation, and transformational grace.
